Convert Image to Black and White

Strip the colour from any photo or graphic in one step. Output as PNG, JPG or WebP — nothing leaves your browser.

100% private — files never leave your device.

Why use this tool

True luminance conversion

Colours are weighted the way the human eye perceives brightness (green counts more than blue), so skin tones and skies keep their natural contrast.

Smaller files, too

Grayscale JPGs compress noticeably better than colour ones, so you often get a size reduction for free.

How to make an image black and white

  1. Upload — drop your image(s).
  2. Pick a format — PNG keeps transparency; JPG is smallest for photos.
  3. Download — save the black-and-white version.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the same as 'desaturate'?

Very close — both remove colour. This uses a perceptual luminance formula, which generally looks more natural than a plain desaturation.

Can I get a sepia or tinted version?

Not from this tool — it's grayscale only. Any image editor can tint the result afterwards.

Is this tool free?

Yes — every tool on ConvertPicto is completely free, with no account, no watermark and no file limits. The site is supported by ads.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. ConvertPicto runs entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your files are read locally, processed on your device and never sent anywhere — we don't even have a server that could receive them.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The site is fully responsive and works in any modern mobile browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). Processing large images is naturally slower on a phone than on a laptop.
