Compress Image to 500 KB

Drop a photo and get a JPG of 500 KB or less. The tool tests different qualities and keeps the highest one that fits, so you do not have to guess with a slider. Nothing is uploaded.

100% private — files never leave your device.

How the 500 KB compressor works

Best quality that fits

Instead of one fixed quality, the tool tries several and keeps the highest one that stays under 500 KB. A simple photo may stay at 90% quality; a detailed one may need less.

Shrinks pixels only if it must

Quality is lowered first, down to 50%. If the image is still too large it is scaled down in small steps until it fits, so you do not lose more resolution than necessary.

Typical use at 500 KB

This size is commonly needed for marketplace listings, blog images and uploads with a half-megabyte limit.

Private by design

The search runs in your browser. IDs, signatures and documents are never uploaded to any server.

How to compress an image to 500 KB

  1. Set the target — it starts at 500 KB; change the number or pick 20, 50, 100, 200 or 500 KB.
  2. Upload — drop your image(s) onto the box or click to browse.
  3. Download — the result shows its dimensions, the quality used and the final size.

What we measured

We took a 4000 x 2667 camera-style photo (2.15 MB, a real photograph enlarged with sensor-style noise) and ran it through this tool.

Frequently asked questions

Will the file really be under 500 KB?

Yes. The limit is 500 x 1024 bytes, the way most upload forms count a kilobyte. If an image cannot be made that small without becoming unusable, the tool says so instead of pretending, and gives you the smallest it can do.

Why not just use the quality slider?

Because you would have to guess. With a size limit you want the best quality that fits, and this tool finds it by testing. A 500 KB limit is usually reached by quality alone, without shrinking the image.

What if my image is already under the limit?

A JPG that is already under your target is returned unchanged, so it is not degraded by being re-compressed.

What format is the output?

Always JPG, because it gives the smallest files for photos and is accepted by almost every upload form. Transparent areas of a PNG are filled with white.

Why is there a tip about dimensions?

Many images from a phone will drop to 500 KB with little or no visible change, since the search mostly reduces quality rather than size.

Is this tool free?

Yes — every tool on ConvertPicto is completely free, with no account, no watermark and no file limits. The site is supported by ads.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. ConvertPicto runs entirely inside your browser using the Canvas API. Your files are read locally, processed on your device and never sent anywhere — we don't even have a server that could receive them.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. The site is fully responsive and works in any modern mobile browser (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Edge). Processing large images is naturally slower on a phone than on a laptop.

How to reduce image file size without losing quality
Do these three things in the right order and a 4 MB photo becomes 80 KB with no visible difference. The order matters more than the tools.
